Dispose of Your Gun
Anyone may bring unwanted (and unloaded and working) guns beginning at 12pm on Saturday March 28 to be dismantled and transformed into garden tools and art. Those donating guns will be celebrated with a gift card for local grocery stores or gas after that gun has been disabled as a thank you for your donation: $100 card for rifles and shotguns, $200 for handguns, and $300 for assault weapons (as supplies last). The blacksmiths will begin to packup at 3pm.
With over 300 million firearms currently in American homes, many are unwanted for reasons ranging from household safety concerns to changes in personal circumstances. Removing unsecured or no-longer-needed guns from the home can prevent tragedy—especially as more than 43,000 Americans die each year from gun violence, including suicides, homicides, domestic violence, and unintentional shootings.
“Guns to Gardens” is a faith-based response to the prophet Isaiah’s ancient vision of peace:
“They shall beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war any more.” — Isaiah 2:4
By transforming weapons into tools for cultivation, The Table Athens seeks to embody this hope—creating beauty, safety, and new life from what once caused fear and harm.
Other Details
Individuals may safely dispose of unwanted guns anonymously.
Trained volunteers will use power tools to make cuts to the gun according to guidelines from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Once these cuts are made it is no longer legally a gun, so there is no transfer of ownership
The public is asked, when bringing their working and unloaded gun, to leave the UNLOADED gun(s) stored in the trunk of the vehicle or in a locked container.
This is a drive-thru event, and only donors of guns and registered volunteers will be allowed on the property.
RAWtools South is part of a growing network of blacksmiths who forge dismantled guns into garden tools and art according to the scripture in Isaiah 2:4: “They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Why Would Someone Want to Donate a Gun?
There are many personal reasons someone would want to dispose of a gun. Some examples include:
A grandfather who has hunting guns from years past and now has grandchildren visiting in the home
A family to whom the police returned a gun after it was used in a suicide or crime by their loved one
A household with someone who has a serious physical illness, depression, or who is going through a crisis, such as unemployment or divorce
An older person who has enjoyed owning guns but no longer feels that they can safely operate or handle them
A family with serious conflict or domestic violence;
A parent who bought a gun during the pandemic but has determined that, with children in the home, a gun poses a greater danger than they had anticipated.
Whatever your reason, if you would like a safe place to dispose of a gun so it is no longer in your home, Guns to Gardens is a very easy way to do it!
