King

If you’ve ever attended a Christmas performance of Handel’s Messiah, you will have heard, or possibly sung of Jesus as ‘King of Kings and Lord of Lords’ (Halleluia, Halleluia).

But the history of Jesus’ people has a strange and strained relationship to monarchy. In the book of Samuel, we read that the ancient Hebrews demand a king so that they can be like the nations around them. God resists at first, but eventually gives in a succession of Israelite kingdoms rises and falls until the nation is divided and destroyed, and the people subjected to a succession of colonizations under the conquest of foreign kings. Surely this is not the life God intends for the people of God.

And yet, kingship is a frequent Biblical image employed to speak of the saving activity and relational reality of God for humans. Join us Tuesday to hear from guest preacher, Rev. Thomas Mitchell, to explore whether and why Christians still name God as King.

Grace & Peace!
